Castroni Ground Fennel
The Fennel (Foeniculum vulgare Mill.) is a Mediterranean herb of the family Apiaceae (Umbelliferae).
Known since ancient times for its aromatic properties, its horticultural cultivation seems to date back to 1500.
The seeds of fennel plant are very aromatic and sweet, are used as a spice especially in Italy, are used with crushed olives and chilli, garlic and bay leaves; it is used in the “finocchiona” (Tuscan salami), in soup Marseillaise eels, in artichokes, Greek courgettes, in the Abruzzo pork, in seasoned oranges, baked potatoes, stuffed rabbits.
The seeds are used in teas and infusions, are very diuretic and detoxifying. In digestive tract, fennel acts as a powerful carminative, reducing intestinal gas and alleviating colic. It stimulates the appetite, fights nausea, diarrhea, and acts as a good anti-inflammatory of several organs. Antiseptic, expectorant, relieves symptoms of cough and bronchitis.
