Petrus Boonekamp was a famous Dutch liquor expert; he created this liquor for the first time in 1777, distilling rare vegetable substances from various continents, and for this reason the drink became instantly famous. Petrus is made from several herbs but amongst these, the galanga, an ever green herb from India and China, also used in pharmacies as an aromatic digestive. On the label a warning cites: “death to who doesn’t serve it”, reminder to the barman’s world wide. Ideally it should be served at room temperature and with no ice, that would alter the drink in colour and flavour.
